The Volume Manager is a utility which allows the user to set the speaker volume from 0 (silent) to 7 (loudest) without having to open the Control Pannel desk accessory. This is useful when you do not want to wait for the Control Panel to come up, or if you are using a program which does not support desk accessories.
An FKEY, or function key, is activated by holding down the command and shift keys then pressing the ID number for the FKEY. In this case, this is 9.
To install:
Before we begin, I must make an apology to you. The recomended method given to me direct from Apple Computer for installing an FKEY into the system file is to use the "Installer" program provided in the system software package. Unfortunately for all of us, the "Installer" is not the best program in the world, and will not be updated until System 7.0 comes out. So, I suppose that we are stuck for a few months. As a result of this, I will give you detailed instructions on how to use the "Installer" program so that your time can be spent enjoying this software rather than trying to figure it out.
First of all, if you are going to use a program such as "ResEdit" from Apple Computer to install this, copy the resources listed below into the system file. You can do this by selecting the resource, choose Copy from the edit menu, and paste in the desired file (in this case, "System").
SuitCase users can treat the file as a "suitcase", by opening it (set display for all types).
Now, for the rest of us who are not interested in the technical side of things and would rather enjoy their programs made by developers such as myself, follow the following instructions. This works for hard disks, and one or more floppy drives. Ready? Ok, time for some fun.
1) Create a disk and name it "Volume Manager" (don't type quotes)
2) Copy the files "System" and "Finder" onto it. These can be found in
the system folder on one of the disks included in the system
software package.
3) Copy the program named "Installer". This can be found on the disk
"System Tools" from the software package.
4) Copy the file "The Volume Manager Script" onto the disk.
Now that was not so bad, was it? But, you are not through yet. Time to give the installer a run for its money.
5) Reboot your computer using the disk you have just created in steps
1-4.
6) Open the disk icon titled "Volume Manager".
7) Double-click on the file "The Volume Manager Script". This will
launch the program "Installer" for you.
8) Select a disk you want the FKEY installed onto.
9) Click on the "install" button.
You may repeat this process (steps 8 and 9) for any and/or all of your disks
that you desire. When you are finished, select "Quit" from the file menu, and restart your computer using one of the disks you have installed The Volume Manager onto. To activate it, hold down the shift and command keys and type a "9" (no quotes). The Volume Manager should appear on your screen, and you are in business.
